It was built in just three weeks in 1989 on behalf of the federal government and replaced an earlier tower built for surveying purposes. The design was created by Schaffhausen engineer Erwin Klaiber. The tower stands at 908.5 meters above sea level, around 93 meters south of the highest point in the canton of Schaffhausen.
The viewing platform can be reached via 225 steps. Above the treetops, there is a unique panoramic view from the Black Forest to the Alps. A special feature of the Hagenturm is that it has a Swiss Army radome at the top. The land, including the access path (2300 m2), belongs to the Swiss Confederation.
The barbecue area by the tower is the ideal place to stop for a nice day's hiking.
