The Museum im Zeughaus conveys knowledge about the history of Switzerland and its army at two locations: in Schaffhausen, in the historic buildings of the cantonal armoury, and in Diessenhofen, in Ratihard 1.

Several permanent and special exhibitions, as well as regular events, explore historical events and current topics that have been or are of social, political, economic, or military significance to Switzerland's development.
Special attention is generally given to the connection between individual topics and the region. One example is the new special exhibition “The Rhine—Lifeline of a Region.” The museum also showcases its extensive collection—which is of great value to the history of military and technology—in its exhibitions and in several display storage areas. The care and preservation of these items are important conservation tasks.
