Schaffhausen Observatory
Media
The Schaffhausen Observatory opened in 2012, replacing the observatory on the Steig, which had been in operation for over 60 years. It features a large observatory equipped with several instruments for observing the sky. The largest is a Newtonian reflector with a 40-cm mirror diameter; with the smaller telescopes, visitors can search for celestial objects on their own under guidance. A cloudy sky is no reason for the Schaffhausen Observatory to skip astronomy: In the modern planetarium, which seats 25, visitors can take breathtaking journeys into space. 360° films can also be shown.
A well-equipped training room can accommodate about 35 people. Here, you’ll receive an introductory overview of the mysteries of astronomy. And if you already know everything there is to know about astronomy: From the planetarium’s terrace, you can enjoy a unique view of the city of Schaffhausen and the nearby Randen. To quench your thirst, there’s the “Astro-Bar,” which can also be set up outdoors when the weather is nice.
