The monastery hospital was probably built in the 13th century and initially only consisted of the core building in the north-west corner (15th century) and the adjoining farm building to the east. In the course of political change, the hospital passed to the town in 1476 and was subsequently greatly expanded. In quick succession, between 1475 and 1535, three houses were added to the old hospital.
The former Hospital of the Holy Spirit comprises five buildings gathered around a courtyard, reflecting the historical development from medieval monastery hospital to municipal hospital and orphanage.
The buildings were tastefully restored between 1999 and 2002, preserving as much of the original building fabric as possible. Today they house stylish meeting and event rooms for the town and the public, the town archives, wheelchair-accessible apartments and the tourist office.
