Sankt Georgen Monastery Museum
The Sankt Georgen Monastery Museum in Stein am Rhein is one of the best-preserved medieval monastery complexes in Switzerland.
Media
Founded around 1007 by Emperor Henry II, it was abolished during the Reformation in 1525. Nevertheless, the monastery ensemble, with all the rooms that belonged to a Benedictine abbey, has been almost completely preserved and is now considered a unique testimony to late medieval architecture and art.
The banqueting hall, which was built under the last abbot, David von Winkelsheim, around 1515 and houses one of the most important early Renaissance fresco cycles north of the Alps, is particularly noteworthy. The murals are an outstanding example of the art of this period.
