St. George's Monastery Museum
The Museum of St. George's Abbey in Stein am Rhein is one of Switzerland's best-preserved medieval monastic complexes.
Media
Founded around 1007 by Emperor Henry II, it was dissolved in 1525 during the Reformation. Nevertheless, the monastery complex, with all the rooms belonging to a Benedictine abbey, remained almost completely preserved and is now considered a unique testament to late medieval times architecture and art.
Particularly noteworthy is the Great Hall, which was built around 1515 under the last abbot, David von Winkelsheim, and houses one of the most significant fresco cycles of the Early Renaissance north of the Alps. The wall paintings are an outstanding example of the art of this era.
