Plaster Museum with Mine Tunnel
A visit to the former gypsum mine in Schleitheim, which offers a glimpse into 18th- and 19th-century gypsum mining methods, is a truly memorable experience. It is the only gypsum mine in Switzerland that is open to the public.

In the 18th and 19th centuries, gypsum mining in open-pit and underground quarries provided employment and income for the entire Schleitheim region. Schleitheim gypsum was a highly sought-after product.
Today, visitors can follow in the footsteps of the former gypsum miners and venture about 200 meters deep into the mountain, until—just as it once did for the miners—a small lake blocks their path. The water and air temperatures in the tunnels remain at around 10 degrees in both summer and winter. Venturing into the gypsum layer—deposited approximately 240 million years ago—through tunnels that have been secured by mining standards and are periodically inspected is a fascinating and educational experience.
