Church of St. Johann

Church of St. Johann
The foundation of the former parish church dates back to around the year 1000. Its total width of 34 meters is only surpassed in Switzerland by the cathedrals in Basel and Bern. The baroque stucco ceiling in the nave was created by Johann Jakob Schärer in 1733. The fresco depicting the carrying of the cross on the west wall next to the organ was created around 1500 and shows the oldest known (partial) view of Schaffhausen in the background. The newly renovated St. Johann Church was consecrated in 1990; it is also used as a concert church and is the venue for Bach festivals.
