Church of St. Johann
The founding of the former parish church dates back to around the year 1000. Its total width of 34 meters is surpassed in Switzerland only by the cathedrals in Basel and Bern.
The Baroque stucco ceiling in the nave was created by Johann Jakob Schärer in 1733. The fresco depicting the carrying of the cross on the west wall next to the organ was created around 1500 and shows the oldest known (partial) view of Schaffhausen in the background. The newly renovated St. Johann Church was inaugurated in 1990; it is also used as a concert hall and is the venue for the Bach Festival.
