Haus zum Ritter
The Haus zum Ritter is one of three painted houses still standing in our town.
There used to be about ten such painted houses - a painted house was a sign of prosperity.
The Ritter is one of the most beautiful houses in the town and the paintings are considered to be the most important Renaissance frescoes north of the Alps.
Originally there were two houses. This becomes clear when you compare the left half of the house with the right half. The windows are arranged asymmetrically and are unequal in size.
Rebuilt in 1566 by Knight Hans von Waldkirch, who had the façade painted by the famous Schaffhausen painter Tobias Stimmer in 1568/70. Original frescoes masterfully recreated in 1938/39 and 1943 by Carl Roesch, Diessenhofen, in the spirit of Tobias Stimmer.
