Church 'uf Burg' and Roman Fort
Unnoticed by many visitors to the medieval town of Stein am Rhein, a small gem is hidden on the other side of the Rhine: the church «uf Burg», the oldest place of worship in the Canton of Schaffhausen.
The church has a turbulent and complicated history, both legally and structurally. It stands in the middle of the Roman fort of Tasgetium, which was built in the 3rd century.
The fort was built shortly before 300 AD after the Alemannic invasions. Remains of the walls still bear witness to this today, and the current church stands in the center of the fort. Excavations have shown that Christian services were held for over 1,400 years in the former late Roman fort Tasgetium.
Today, visitors are primarily rewarded by the murals in the choir, which radiate with sacred dignity. They date from just before 1420 and depict scenes from Christian salvation history in 30 paintings, divided into three cycles.
