Church "uf Burg" and Roman fort

Church "uf Burg" and Roman fort
Unnoticed by many visitors to the medieval town of Stein am Rhein, the "uf Burg" church on the other bank of the Rhine hides a little gem: the oldest place of worship in the canton of Schaffhausen.

The church has had a turbulent and complicated history, both legally and structurally. It stands in the middle of the Roman fort of Tasgetium, which was built in the 3rd century.

The fort was built shortly before 300 AD after the Alemannic invasions. Remains of the walls still bear witness to this today, and today's church stands in the center of the fort. Excavations have shown that Christian services were held in the former late Roman fort of Tasgetium for over 1,400 years.

Today, visitors are rewarded above all by the wall paintings in the choir, which shine with sacred dignity. They date from shortly before 1420 and depict scenes from the Christian history of salvation in 30 paintings divided into three cycles.
